FUN AT THE BRICKYARD & ANOTHER ANDERSON WIN!

Posted by dillon in dillon welch

It's Monday, and I'm enjoying one of the few free Monday's I have left.  It's hard to believe school will be starting in a few weeks.  The summer has gone so fast!

My friend Chris Wilner and I went to the Brickyard 400 yesterday.  We had a great time.  We hung out with my dad for awhile during the morning in the TV compound.  We went through all the production trucks and spoke with all the announcers.  It's always cool to see how everything works behind the scenes.  My dad had to get working so Chris and I took off and walked all around.   We went to the museum and did a lot of stuff to kill time before going up to the suite to watch the race.  We watched from the tower terrace suite of Mr. Wayne Hillis.  He is such a nice person and always treats my family and me great.  Nancy and Eileen kinda run things up there and they treat me like family and they all take a lot of interest in my racing.  There's just a lot of nice people up there and I can't say enough how appreciative I am to Mr. Hillis.

I am looking forward to racing again this week.  Hopefully the weather will cooperate.  It didn't on Saturday when we were supposed to race at Anderson but because they had so much rain early in the day, there were weepers on the track that kept us from racing.  It had been called off earlier in the day but for some reason we were not notified so we drove up to Anderson only to see that the place was empty.  That just added to the disappointment of not running an event I was really looking forward to running.  Oh well...

I did race once last week, Wednesday at Anderson.   It was a different kind of race.  I was on the track with the Ford Focus cars along with the normal Kenyon cars.  Due to the low car count, the series' were combined to put on a better show for the fans. The race would be scored as two different races, sort of like in a sports car race. Because Kenyon's have about 60 horsepower less, we were like the GT cars and the Focus cars were the Daytona Prototypes you could say.  I qualified third overall, and was the fastest Kenyon.  The top six qualifiers were inverted for the feature which would put me in the fourth starting spot.

The heat races were run separately and I won the Kenyon heat race. Starting outside the second row in the feature, I washed up a bit coming out of turn two on the first lap, but I was still able to stay in fourth.  About five laps in, I made a move to pass Grant Galloway (who I am battling with for the points lead in the Kenyon). Going into the race, I knew I had to act quickly because if a Focus car got in front of me I might never catch back up to Grant.  Anyway, I was inside him going into one but we still managed to bang wheels and he spun out.  I felt really bad because I wanted to race him clean, but I was able to get a good run on him and those don't come often at Anderson.  When we restarted I was the third car in line and held off  the faster Focus cars behind me for a while, but eventually a few got by and I wound up 6th overall.  But, most importantly, I was the highest finishing Kenyon.

As I mentioned earlier, the race was scored based on your series.  So even though I finished sixth overall I was the first place Kenyon.  That makes win number 5 for this year, and I really enjoyed this one because I raced in a lot of traffic.  I'm not saying that I don't enjoy winning by a big margin, but I like the competition so this was a fun one.

Next up is a race on Wednesday at Plymouth.  It's a track I like a lot, and I had a really fun race there last time so I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks for reading!
