DILLON DRIVES HOOKED UP CAR TO WIN AT PLYMOUTH

Posted by dillon in winnews

Win number three was a sweet one.

Thursday night at Plymouth Speedway Dillon Welch started on the outstide of the front row, squeezed past Shannon McIntosh entering turn three, and led every lap to score his third win of the USAC Regional Midget Series seaon.

"I had not run here before in a Midget while others in the race had raced here and tested here," a happy Welch said afterwards.  "There were some other drivers who I'm pretty sure believed they were going to win, so to come in and take care of business felt really good and shows how good our team is."

After qualifying third quickest and finishing second in the Heat race, Welch's #4 Z-Line Designs/St.Vincent Sports Performance/ClubSport/VCS Beast was on a rail in the Feature.  Despite four yellow flag cautions keeping the field

FIRST WIN IN MIDGET FEELS GOOD

Posted by dillon in windillon welch

Hey team, I can't believe I'm already saying this, but we won!
Wednesday night we were racing at the Indianapolis Speedrome, a track with a long history of USAC Midget racing.  The Speedrome is a driver's track.  It's a small, flat 1/5 mile track and produces a lot of beating and banging so I was anxious to get going.
Hot laps went well.  I was fastest in the first session.  We had a little throttle issue in the second practice but got it worked out.  When practice was complete, I was confident I had a good car under me.

In the Heat race, I started fourth.  I came off of turn four to get the green flag and got loose and grazed the wall. Thankfully, that wasn't a sign of things to come.  I passed the third place

GLAD TO BE BACK IN THE SEAT, EVEN IF IT'S A KART

Hello everyone!  It's been a while!

I haven't had very much to write about lately, at least from a racing standpoint.  I could have written about school but there is only so much one can take reading about school, right?  Although, I did get straight-A’s last grading period which made me proud.  Anyway, you came to read about racing, so let’s talk about some racing.

We will be announcing our racing program very soon.  I can tell you that I will be running a “midget” in USAC’s regional schedule.  The “regional midget” is the same size chassis as the Kenyon midget I've run the past 3 years, but the regional car has nearly three times the horsepower.  More than 300 horsepower for a 900 lbs. car...so they move pretty quick.

DIFFERENT RACE, FAMILIAR OUTCOME

Posted by dillon in winnews

The experiment created excitement and ended with Dillon Welch holding another first place trophy.

It was an unusual sight at the beginning of the race; the Kenyon midgets and the Ford Focus midgets lined up to compete against one another despite the fact the K-cars were giving up 60 horsepower to the Focus cars.  Series executives Don Kenyon and Eric Bunn had come up with the idea to create a fuller field and make it more entertaining for the fans.

Taking a page from the sportscar ranks, there would be two races within the race. Even though both series were on the track at the same time, there would be a Focus winner and a Kenyon winner.

FINALLY! A WIN!

Posted by dillon in windillon welch

I won on Friday at Anderson for the first time in the Kenyon Midget series! (Last season I was credited for a win after a driver failed tech but I never considered it a win.)

The day started off with everybody looking to the sky.  It didn't look very promising, but thankfully we got all the racing in without feeling a single rain drop.

Practice went well.  Mel had the car set up just right so I was able to drive it hard.  We set fast time in qualifying and I was two tenths of a second faster than the second quickest car.  USAC changed the rules around this year so that the heat and feature lineups are determined by the qualifying times.  So, since I was "fast time", I would start first in the heat and the feature, which is nice on a track that's tough to pass
