GREAT WEEK OF RACING

Posted by dillonuser in dillon welch

I've got to admit I'm kinda bored with summer more often than I wish I was, but that's why I love racing during the week. I'm excited for this week's racing schedule. I race tomorrow night (Wed.) at Anderson, and the national midgets run at Raceway Park on Thursday. The trucks race at IRP (ORP) Friday, the Nationwide Series runs Saturday, and then it's the Brickyard 400 on Sunday. I'm not sure how much of it I'll make in person, but I'm definitely going to the Brickyard on Sunday.

Tomorrow, before my race at Anderson, I'm going to watch my dad in "The Race for Riley" celebrity go-kart race at New Castle Motorsports Park. It's an annual event hosted by John Andretti. Tony Stewart will be there tomorrow too.

Oh, our t-shirts have been finalized, along with the hero cards and they should be

LOOK WHO'S BACK...

Posted by dillonuser in dillon welch

Hi everyone! Sorry the blog updates have been so scarce... but here is the beginning of what I'm calling the "summer dish series". I'm planning to update this every day... so keep checkin' in.

I'm so glad that it's summer because this is when the racing season goes full swing. I'm pumped about running tomorrow at Mt. Lawn and Friday at Anderson. I've also really enjoyed the summer off the track. It's been great sleeping-in as much as possible, relaxing by our pool and hanging out with my friend Erik before he moves to Wisconsin in August, and helping out at our church with Vacation Bible School, which I've enjoyed. And, I'm always working out at St. Vincent Sports Performance Center, one of our main sponsors. It's definitely been a good summer so far!

DILLON READY FOR TWO THIS WEEK

Posted by dillonuser in news

Dillon Welch has had a good season, but he is anxious for an opportunity to make it much better in the span of three days.

"We're fifth in points but I feel like we're a championship caliber team," Welch said. "We just haven't gotten on one of those streaks that I know we're capable of."

The 14 year old Welch will race his Kenyon Midget at Mt. Lawn Speedway near New Castle on Wednesday, and then circle the quarter-mile high-banked oval at Anderson Speedway on Friday night

Welch had a shot a winning at Mt. Lawn the last time the track hosted the series but while running second, he tangled with race leader Jeff Wimmenauer and had to settle for sixth.

"I really like Mt. Lawn and believe we're as good there as anyone," Welch said.

Welch also likes his chances in Friday night's show at

WILD ONE AT ANDERSON

Posted by dillonuser in dillon welch

We ran at Anderson on a historic Wednesday night--June 11--and had a strong run. Never before had USAC run 6 features in one night! The K-cars, Ford Focus, and regional midgets all ran 2 features each.

Because of time, there was no qualifying and we just ran heat and feature races. In the first round of heat races, I started 5th and finished fourth right on the bumper of Sammy Imel, the 2006 Kenyon midget runner up who was also running a regional midget that night.

Starting eigth in the the first feature, I wound up finishing 6th with a very loose race car. It was a disappointment for sure. Not that sixth is bad in the feature, but I think we're better than that.

After a short intermission, we were back to racing. This round, again due to the lack of time, we only ran the feature. USAC

HISTORIC PROGRAM SCHEDULED AT ANDERSON WEDNESDAY

Posted by dillonuser in news

Dillon Welch will be part of an historic night of racing Wednesday (6/11) at Anderson Speedway.

Never before has a single night of USAC racing featured six different main events. The Kenyon Midgets, Ford Focus, and Regional Midgets will provide the action on the high-banked quarter-mile track.

"It will be two shows in one night," said promoter Don Kenyon. "The K-cars, Focus' and Regional Midgets will run hot laps, heat races, and features. And when it's over, they'll do it again."

Welch is looking forward to a full night behind the wheel.

"I'm sure it's going to be tiring," Dillon said. "But that's why I spend all the time I do working out. Hopefully it pays off on a night like this. Plus, if you're gonna get worn out, what better way to do it."

Wednesday's program begins with hot laps at

A WIN! WELL, SORTA

Posted by dillonuser in dillon welch

We won our first race! Well, officially we got the win.

The K-cars raced on the quarter-mile track at Illiana Speedway last Wednesday (5/28) in Schereville, IN for the first time.

During the first practice session we didn't have enough gear in the car , but once we got it changed the car felt great the rest of the night.
After finishing 3rd in my heat race, I started from the pole in the feature. Mel Kenyon, my crew chief, added 10 pounds of crossweight to the car before the feature to help suit the colder temperatures and the car was great for the first half of the race.
However, after leading the first 18 laps, the car began to tighten up and Dalton Armstrong passed me. He ended up beating me to the finish line by a couple car lengths. (Mel said that if he hadn't changed the crossweight,

DQ GIVES WELCH FIRST USAC WIN

Posted by dillonuser in news

It didn't come the way he had envisioned, but Dillon Welch scored his first USAC Kenyon Midget feature win last night (5/28) at Illiana Speedway.

After finishing second in the Kenyon's first-ever feature at Illiana, Welch was awarded the victory when apparent winner Dalton Armstrong failed post-race technical inspection. Armstrong's car did not meet the mandatory weight requirement.

"I have mixed emotions," Welch said upon being congratulated for his initial victory. "I definitely pictured it coming differently than this."

Initially it looked like Welch would secure the victory on his own. After starting from the pole, Dillon beat Armstrong into turn one and led the first 18 laps of the 30 lap feature. But after pulling away for a several car length lead, Welch's car began to tighten up and

READY TO RACE ON THURSDAY

Posted by dillonuser in news

After a successful test on Sunday afternoon, Dillon Welch is ready to roll.

Because of wet weather and a scheduling quirk, the Kenyon midget driver hasn't run a race since April 6th. Rain caused postponement of the Kenyon Series' scheduled event last Wednesday at Anderson Speedway. The makeup date was originially slated for this Wednesday (5/21) but it has since been pushed back to June 11, extending the gap another day.

"It seems like forever since we've raced," Welch said Monday. "Seven weeks is a long time to be out of the car."

That is precisely why Sunday's test at Mt. Lawn Speedway (New Castle) was so beneficial.

RAINED OUT AT ANDERSON; RESCHEDULED

Posted by dillonuser in news

Dillon Welch will have to wait a little longer before returning to action. The USAC Kenyon Midget race slated for Wednesday May 14 was rained out.

"I've waited six weeks since my last race, so I guess I can last another week," Dillon said while standing in the pits of a soggy Anderson Speedway. "It's definitely frustrating though."

Weather permitting, Welch will get plenty of time in the car next week. An open test is scheduled for Sunday (May 18) at Mt. Lawn Speedway in New Castle before returning for a race there on Thursday (May 21-22). The Anderson rainout of May 14 is being rescheduled as part of a double-header at Anderson Speedway on June

WHAT I'VE BEEN DOING

Posted by dillonuser in dillon welch

My most recent Kenyon Midget race was back on April 6th, so I've had some off time. Too much time! I really miss being in the car. I've been running on the school track team to stay fit and keep occupied. It's fun but it's definitely not the type of racing I want to be doing.

My next Kenyon race is May 14th at Anderson, and the schedule really gets going at that point. One thing is for sure, when I do get back in the car I will be comfortable. Fred Gans from Mark 1 did a custom seat for me and it's really nice. Mark 1 does a lot of seats for IndyCar drivers and I feel lucky that Fred took the time to do mine. Thanks Fred!!!

If you check out our website regularly, you know that it has a new look. I really like it. It's actually just the beginning of the changes. So keep checking it out.
